Cultivating BEingness: A Pathway to Nervous System Rewiring and Thriving
Oct 15, 2024In today's world, where anxiety and stress seem ever-present, many people are searching for ways to return to a state of calm, presence, and resilience. I call what we all seem to be seeking is BEingness. We feel this sense of BEingwhen we are wired into the parasympathetic state our nervous system. The requirement to operate from this gear of our nervous system is foundational safety. We are human BEings, it makes sense that our body, mind, and spirit can truly thrive in a state of BEingness
Let me be clear, BEingness is not about sitting in stillness, meditating on a cushion for hours. Instead, BEingness is about living fully present, engaged, thriving in life. It’s an antidote to being stuck in the survival-driven fight, flight, or freeze mode that so many of us are familiar with.
How can we achieve this optimal state of BEingness?
While meditation has been widely celebrated for its benefits in calming the mind and regulating the nervous system, recent research shows that embodiment practices may be more effective in rewiring the nervous system. Embodiment refers to practices that anchor the nervous system through body-based experiences, rather than purely cognitive or mental techniques. In essence, it’s about bringing awareness back to the body and living through the body, instead of simply trying to control the mind.
Studies on somatic practices have shown that engaging the body actively can lead to deeper and longer-lasting effects on nervous system regulation. For example, practices like trauma release exercises (TRE®), breath work, and intentional movement can activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the body’s "rest-digest-tend-befriend" system where we can BE. Cultivating BEingness helps to decrease anxiety, reduce muscle tension, and promote overall resilience. Unlike meditation, which relies on the mind alone, embodiment practices get your gut heart and head in alignment and on the same team tapping the collective power of our whole BEing to feel our way into safety and balance.

The Power of Micro-Practices in Cultivating BEingness
You don’t have to overhaul your life to cultivate BEingness. In fact, micro-practices—small, consistent actions—can have a big impact on rewiring your nervous system. Research has shown that small, repeated behaviors can create new neural pathways, transforming how the brain and body respond to stress over time. These simple actions help bring the nervous system out of a high-gear survival state and into a place of safety and presence. The beauty of micro-practices is that they don’t require long periods of time; they are quick, accessible, and effective, making them easy to integrate consistently into daily life. It is a very exciting time to be working in the world of embodiment given all the scientific support of the efficacy of these practices. That said, in my expereince, the biggest key to an impactful micro-practice ritual is the intention. It's not about reminding yourself to "do an exercise" or even "doing it right", rather it's simply about BEing with yourself, valuing yourself, noticing what feels good, right, soothing, and connecting... tuning in, and responding to your own needs. This is where the "art" of art and science of BEing comes in.
To that end, I've created BE ME Breaks. These are body-based micro-practices designed to help cultivate BEingness by attuning to and connecting with the Body Emotional Mental and Essence realms to rewire the nervous system. The ABCs of a BE ME break are: Embody Authentic Alignemnt, Body Language (rewriting your story) and Connecting and Caring for yourself. Don't we all deserve a BE ME Break? Try it for yourself here
